LICK OBSERVATORY IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!
VISIT LICK

This workshop will gather faculty from Bay Area community colleges and Cal State campuses as well as leaders from the UC Observatories / Lick Observatory community and other astronomy partners to advance the ASTRAL (Astronomy/STEM Alliance with Lick Observatory) consortium, which was established in Fall 2023. Faculty who are current members of the consortium are welcome, as well as faculty who are interested in becoming members.

Goals of the workshop include:

  • Building community among Bay Area public college faculty, UC Observatories / Lick Observatory leadership, and other astronomy partners
  • Sharing results of initial consortium efforts, with a focus on the benefits to college students
  • Advancing consortium programs and processes based on college students’ and faculty members’ needs
  • Moving toward responsible expansion of the consortium, including institutional membership
In addition to discussions of the goals above, the workshop will include a viewing through the historical 36” refractor at Lick Observatory and demonstrations of the Nickel 1-m and Shane 3-m telescopes. Demonstrations of software for working with data from the telescopes may also be included. The workshop will take place at Lick Observatory on Mt. Hamilton, about a 1-hour drive from San Jose, CA. Please note that workshop capacity is somewhat limited due to limited dorm space. We will do our best to accommodate as many interested applicants as possible.
This workshop is offered at no cost to participants and is funded through a generous grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
